More from old A-Z
From the same A-Z that I described that tube map, another interesting section
is a gazetteer towards the back of "Places of Interest".
Apart from some that we might expect today, like Buck house and the Albert
memorial, it includes some less familiar places (to me), such as the College of
Arms, Blackfriars, and Crosby Hall, Cheyne Walk, and a Safety, Health and
Welfare Museum listed at Horseferry road (I think I once heard someone
recalling a visit to this, though when I worked for British Safety Council I
never heard anyone mention it, so I guess it is no longer there. Likewise a
Parkes Museum, about public health and sanitation on Buckingham Palace Road.
Also London Stone, in St.Swithin's wall. And Staple inn, Holborn(Chancery lane
tube)
Some memories of yesteryear, for those old enough: the Docks! (each listed with
travel info.); Festival Pleasure Gardens & Fun Fair, at Battersea Park; Fleet
street, of course (busy thoroughfare, centre of the newspaper industry);
People's Palace, in Mile End Road (promising "Continental Films, every Sun,
7.30" and a "Pantomine at Xmas, seats 1/6d to 2/6d" (station Stepney Green);
Scotland yard(New Scotland Yard) at Victoria Embankment of course.
Well, not strictly transport, but part of the changing map and places you might
have gone to.
