Whilst we're on the subject of boundary zone tickets, I occasionally
need to go to Chelmsford. At Liverpool Street I usually ask for a BZ2
to Chelmsford ticket but my request usually gets refused as I'm told
that there is no stop in Z2 from Liverpool Street towards Stratford. I
seem to recall reading that there's no requirement for there to be a
stop for a BZ tickets (unlike named stations), but have never felt
like arguing the toss for such a small amount. Who is right in this
case?

You are.

The point to remember is that a BZ "ticket" isn't a separate ticket.
Rather, it's a coupon (or pair of coupons) that converts your (say) R12
Travelcard into a "R12 Travelcard plus one return trip from anywhere in
zones 1 or 2 to Chelmsford" ticket.

So there's no question of a station in zone 2.

All this is spelled out in one of the on-line fares manuals.
