For our British posters, I have a question about telephone dials. Did
the letters* on British telephone dials always correspond to those of
US dials? How about those of other European countries?
1
2=ABC
3=DEF
4=GHI
5=JKL
6=MNO
7=PRS (Q added later.)
8=TUV
9=WXY (Z added later)
0 operator (US dials had a Z before 1950 but rarely used).
In the UK "Operator" is 100 on a landline, some other 3-digit code on
cellphones (varies from operator to operator - so much for standards!)
Some early Nokia Orange phones had 6=MN, 0=OQZ
