they might be.

Like it or not, academic freedom just like free speech, gives nobody licence
to break the law. What it does do is give anyone the right to speak out
against
a particular law or law without fear of retribution, from academic authorities
or anyone else.

Its nothing to do with academia - its just some immature idiot using any
excuse he can think of in order to not get done for his juvenile activities.
Seems to have worked in this case which given the idiotic rulings our courts
seem to make these days doesn't surprise me in the least.
