In the days when I was claiming expenses for Oyster use the main advantage
of ticket stops, apart from lack of queues, was that I could top up the
amount I wanted, not some fixed minimum or the limit of my change.
FWIW, rail TVMs (not Tube) allow you to specify an amount to top up by,
and then dispense change (and a receipt).
(Also, it is possible to use rail TVMs as a cheeky way of getting change
from a note - go through the motions of topping up your Oyster, insert
the note, then cancel the top-up and your money will be returned as
coins as the TVMs don't have a means of returning notes. Obviously this
isn't an intended application!)
