Perhaps too many people were using it?


Or perhaps it's to do with Oyster's standing in the financial world?
Technically oyster cards can be cashed in - and if they can also be used to
make payments perhaps a few people started to get worried that oyster cards
were becoming cash cards. (i'm not saying this is too bad an idea, though it
would be nice to be able to use Oyster with vending machines and small
retailers like in Hong Kong)

Of course it might have something to do with fare capping.
