Default Oyster PrePay from Paddington

Does anyone know if it is possible to use Oyster prepay from London
Paddington to Ealing Broadway?

No, it isn't.

That's what I thought, but when I asked at the tube ticket office at
Paddington they said it was possible..

Maybe they were answering the question "can you use oyster from Paddington
Underground to Ealing Underground?"

No, I asked about using it on Thames Trains (as it was then), the person
thought about it and decided it was fine because there were ticket barriers
at Ealing.

What would happen anyway - if you were stopped with prepay on the train then
I guess it wouldn't be valid when they checked it but if you weren't stopped
and walked through the barriers you'd be allowed out but I presume you'd
have an uncomplete journey so not be allowed back in the next time?

This doesn't really affect me because I have an Oyster travel card anyway -
but once they sort out capping it would potentially be annoying for people
who have been "capped" at travelcard price but unable to use national rail
services. Maybe this will get sorted out but I can't think how it would
work!
