Default Fare evasion

Hi There

A few weks ago, I took a different route into work as I had missed the
overland train.

Hence I got onto the tube at a Zone 3 station and got out at a Zone 2
station on a 2 to 3 Travelcard. But I'd forgotten that I needed a Zone
1 extension as I was passing through Zone 1.

Anyway, Revenue Prosecutions were on the other end - truly I wasnt
thinking clearly at the time as I should have just gone up to them,
explained Id forgotten to get an extension etc.

However, I vokuntarily gave my ticket for checking and then stupidly
panicked and lied when asked where I had got on.

Obviously this is enough for the inspector to feel that I had tried to
defraud LU? However, she did not give me much of a chance to explain!

One of her questions was 'do you have any money on you'? I said yes a
bit how much do you want for the penalty fare etc? she said 'can you
just answer the question please'?

All in all very intimidation. I have had a letter from LU, explaining
they may take legal action and asking me for any comment.

I explained the circumstances, apologised, asked if we could avoid
going to court, accepted responsiblity and requested they tell me how
much the fine will be and I will send them a cheque.

Any idea how they normally behave in these circumstances?

Any help much appreciated

Many thanks

Mumtaz
