Edgware Road (a bit like Earl's Court) has always been a nightmare
to navigate.

Edgware Road westbound is really easy to deal with. About half way
down platforms 3 and 4 are signal repeaters; it's easy enough to
place yourself where both are visible. Whichever one goes green is
the train that will go first.
Clever! But does it work at termini like Hammersmith or Whitechapel.
Yes, but unless the trains are on both sides of the same island platform,
you might have difficulty seeing both signals and reacting quickly enough
when one signal turns green. This is a problem at Edgware Road if the
trains in question are at platforms 2 and 4.
Is it the signal which decides when the train will leave or the
driver?
The signal indicates which train will leave first, but it's up to the driver
how quickly he reacts to it. For example, if the train arrived at the
terminus late or there is a crew change, the driver might not be ready to
depart when the signal turns green. Only in very exceptional circumstances
will the green signal revert to red to enable another train to leave first,
and in that case there is always a 2-minute delay before another signal is
set to green.
