Precisely, the shorter journys subsidising the longer ones. How about a "per
mile" ticket or something, and on deep level tubes you can charge 1.5 miles
per mile because of increased costs.


I think the NYC system is fairer. It emphasises the fact that it is
one city. You don't feel so aggrieved at the ******* going two stops
in rush hour taking up seats if you know they've paid the same fare as
you.
