Default Ticket barriers at Finchley Central

Hi,

For the past couple of mornings there have been ticket inspectors at
Finchley Central checking tickets. The barriers there are allways kept
open so I normaly do not swipe my Oyster card just walk through. But
when they checked my ticket they asked me to go back and swipe the
Oyster card at the barrier.

I asked them why they do not simply keep the barriers closed so that
only people who have valid tickets can get through. Their response was
that they had to keep the barriers open for safety reasons. They would
not go into any more detail as it is apparently 'complicated' which
got me curious. Maybe the only safety concerned is safeguarding the
jobs of the ticket inspecters.
