A group headed by John Prideaux is today
launching alternative "Superlink" proposals
for Crossrail which would see long distance
"intercity" type services through the central
London tunnel. This is more like the original
proposals for Crossrail many years ago, linking
places such as Bristol and Oxford with Cambridge
and Norwich. Apparently they reckon that this will
be much more profitable and provide better value
for money. I am not sure how they will deal with
GWML electrification issues.

Correction ! having now seen the map published in the Times, it appears
that the Superlink proposals are for outer-suburban type services:
Reading-Tilbury
Guildford and Basingstoke-Reading-Cambridge
How do the trains get from the Southwest Mainline to the Crossrail tunnel?
Heathrow-Stansted
Northampton-Southend, Clacton and Ispwich
Northampton to Ipswich via London? It would be quicker to cycle.
Also Tottenham Ct Rd-Dartford (?)
