Not supposed to. However given the poor ventilation in those cabs in the
hot weather, any way that a flow of air can be created helps.

I remember years ago when the central line had 1962 stock, in hot weather
some guards would leave one or both of their doors open between stations on
the open sections at the east end of the line. Probably wasn't allowed
either but it used to be nice for passengers in the end car too.
