I was in the same situation last night
touched barrier £20 credited £1.10 deducted
ticket office could not /would not help
took name of station supervisor to moan at oyster
ticket clerk then actually tried to credit it back
it worked no problem £1.10 back on card

No problems at London Bridge when I did the same a couple of days ago,
the LU ticket clerk immediately understood what I was doing and
cancelled the journey.

I've never had any problem with LU staff when trying to resolve Oyster
problems - usually unresolved journeys thanks to me forgetting to touch
out at NR platform readers.
