Easier said than done... how would he tell where the train has come from?
I think you mean that he should avoid trains which call at more than half
a dozen places before reaching Waterloo.

Why? Are the trains via Hounslow always overtaken? Or even usually
overtaken?

Off-peak at least the 11/41 trains via Hounslow are always overtaken by the
16/46 trains from Windsor that go via Richmond.
