Fuel Cells

In January 2004 a knobhead posted he
"However in response to your rebuttal of Steve's claim at least one
manufacturer IS claiming to be going to market in 2004 with a fuel cell
powered laptop, three others to my knowledge are claiming by 2005. Life of
8-10 hours per charge, cost anticipated to be about 20% more than
conventional batteries. The first mentioned has already shipped a batch of
a thousand or so for market testing, and it's only January!"
So err where are all these fuel cell powered laptops then? And where are
all the fuel cell powered cars that we were going to be swamped with.
After
all it's over two years since we were assured that these devices were
going
to be everywhere.
Oh yes, anyone going to lay bets on what will happen if you try to take a
fuel cell powered computer onto an aeroplane?
I read a story on that a couple of weeks ago.
They have working models but they are not able to make their design where it
can be reliably produced in even small quantities.
They have spent a lot venture capital but a reliable fuel cell that can be
reproduced in quantity is apparently still a long ways away.
