The job was to give the customer what they asked for, not to question
it. The former could never get you into trouble; the latter, whilst
more helpful, could.

I'm not saying that's right, just saying how it was (and probably
still is).


Given that people haven't changed, if anything they're more stroppy than
they used to be, simply complying with the customer's request is surely all
that's wanted? As we all know, the customer is always right, isn't s/he?
