When I did it, the signal was plated as an automatic. The Line
Controller informed the driver of the next train to expect a pickup, and
when the train was heard/seen approaching someone held out a Bardic (or
equivalent) displaying red.



And then presumably you piled out from the drivers cab door into the
main part of the carriage, which must have been a cause of bemusement
to the normal passengers.
