Hmm. I'd count that as "not having a period Oyster card", assuming
that "which is valid for the journey you're planning to make" is
implicit after "Oyster card" (in the same sense as "you should only
board a train at a manned station if you have a ticket"). But I
suppose you're technically right...

Yes, I quite understand your logic.

Whenever we're discussing Oyster cards I almost feel the need to spell
everything out step by step, given the popular confusion there is
about the whole Oyster system (hence my reply to your post). The
problem of course is that unpacking it to such an extent each time we
discuss Oyster is somewhat laborious.

In the back of my head there's an embryonic Oyster FAQ writing itself
each time an Oyster thread comes round on utl, indeed each time I
explain it to a friend or colleague so the FAQ in the form of a
website for the benefit of non-usenetters (i.e. nearly everyone!)
would be even better. However to explain the whole system in clear yet
precise layman's terms is probably a harder task than it first
appears, for that and other reasons it ain't on the top of my list at
the moment.

Meanwhile perhaps more mention should be made of the official 'Oyster
help' Q&A website - whch does answer most questions - it's at this
