Last month I had my first visit to London in five years, and my
first effort with these machines almost resulted in violence as you
described.

They demand that you select your ticket before you put your money
in, which I found counter-intuitive. Once I'd mastered that, the
machines and I had a much more friendly relationship. I
particularly liked being able to put in two quid for a one day bass
pass rather then needing to go to a station or newsagent.
