![]() The coalition of fools could make things worse. I made no remark about how we got there. Only trhat those now in control might mess it up. I suppose it is possible, whilst Nick is sitting in the corner of a number ten office bored out of his mind because he’s been given nothing to do and David is unable to keep an eye on him because he’s up to his eyeballs in red boxes, that Nick’s attention could be drawn to the big red button marked TRIDENT FIRE and curiosity as to what it does may take over. Otherwise, apart from that, I’m not sure what’s been left to f**k up. |

2010, Tim Fenton remarked: What has been kept "highly secret"? One example will do. The entire (sorry about the tautology) input to the Comprehensive Spending Review that they postponed until after the election. -- Roland Perry |

![]() "allantracy" wrote in message ... Assuming the coalition of fools does not mess up the recovery. What by not applying Labour's keep on spending bull****? Labour's keep on spending bull**** was just for the election. Behind the scenes, they were already planning exactly the same sort of cuts and more that the Tories had been on about. In fifty days time, we will have another budget, between then and now the coalition get to see the previous government’s books that they’ve been keeping highly secret. Somehow, I don’t think it’s going to be good news. The economy has been way beyond the comfort zone of ideological argument for some time now. It’s the mathematics that are in control now and if responding to them means a double dip recession then tough – there’s simply no other option. Though it’s arguable that Labour would have almost certainly failed to respond to the mathematics. Not because of ideology, but because traditionally they have always been incapable of facing up to any harsh financial reality without imploding. With that lot, eventually, it would have taken the IMF to do it for us, quite possibly with Gordon Brown running them (into oblivion) by then. Greece, anyone .... Spain, anyone ??? DW down under |

This was the burying of bad news I was alluding to. Note that the new transport secretary has qualified all of his statements so far by matters financial. Having said that, I confidently expect the new administration to do far more than the previous administration when it comes to transport, despite the financial difficulties, because, as the media has been quick to point out this week, they are not all a bunch of big girl’s blouses. |

![]() New Labour, in the guise of Dawn Primarolo (AKA The Dim Prawn), managed to self off billions of high value properties of the Inland Revenue and Customs and Excise in a PFI deal to a company based in a tax haven. Thus missing out completely on the significant sums of stamp duty from the sale plus all tax revenues, till year dot, on the rental income. Even worse, her department actually found this out at the time of naming the preferred bidder but because they had not specified only UK tax paying companies could bid, in the first place, under European Law they could not then pull out of the deal. It is widely rumoured that a student on a work experience placement in the Paymaster General’s office was the first to highlight this issue. Dawn’s other achievements included overseeing the introduction of the tax credit system, she was later accused of completely losing control of her brief by a select committee leaving many families worse off. She was also responsible for introducing the IR35 tax arrangements, much hated by IT contractors although very few have ever ended up paying the new tax. It is estimated that the IR35 tax arrangements are currently costing five times more to administer than they actually raise in tax revenues. Dawn has a BA degree in Social Science. |

There was something on the radio a while back, and IIRC it doesn't work like that. They were making the point that the PM can't order an attack, only ask for one, and it is up to the military to actually do it (going right to the top if they think the PM has lost his marbles). The actual trigger is onboard the boat. -- Arthur Figgis Surrey, UK |
