Blackwall Tunnel Sunday Nights
I've driven back from London Stansted on a Sunday night a few times
recently, only to be informed by the overhead signs that the Blackwall Tunnel is closed. Why does this tend to happen on Sunday nights? Thanks. |

I noticed there were signs saying it was closed yesterday morning (04.30ish) too. -- Kat Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea - Robert A. Why does this tend to happen on Sunday nights? "they" are watching you "they" have noted your movements "they" see you coming "they" close the tunnel http://www.superscript.co.uk/gazette...roadworks.html As part of Transport for London's (TfL's) commitment to improve conditions on the London road network, TfL is currently carrying out a £15.5 million refurbishment to extend the life of the southbound Blackwall tunnel by 30 years. Since April 2003 Transport for London has been closing the southbound Blackwall tunnel completely on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights when this work is carried out. This has improved working conditions in the tunnel and reduced the overall delay to tunnel users. As a result of this trial, TfL has decided to continue with night time weekend closures of the southbound tunnel until the planned completion of the work in 2004. Southbound single lane closures Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:00pm to 6:00am the following morning. Southbound full tunnel closures Fridays and Saturdays 9:00pm to 8:00am the following morning Sundays 9:00pm to 6:00am the following morning. |

That suggests it would die/close/collapse if they didn't do the work, but it's only 36 years old! snip Why don't they put north- and south-bound traffic through the same tunnel as has been done in the past? Any ideas? It's been many years since there was two-way traffic in the old tunnel (as there was of course for the first 70 years of its existence). IIRC it originally had a footway on each side like Rotherhithe tunnel. After the new tunnel was opened in 1967, they widened the carriageway of the old tunnel by removing the right-hand footway. The right-hand lane, being close to the tunnel wall, has a very restricted maximum vehicle height, which means that it cannot be used as the sole southbound lane. Hence it is not possible to run two-way traffic through the old tunnel. -- Richard J. (to e-mail me, swap uk and yon in address) |
