No, it is not a dream, it is a practicality.
In the first place, the government is subsidising private businesses; this is absurd. Either they should be run with no subsidy at all, in which case fares would go through the roof, or they should be totally subsidised. In the latter case you really don't appreciate the enormous saving this would bring about in the cost of travel. We could afford to invest a great deal more in the railways and such thing as track maintenance. The enormous reductions in petrol and oil, less wear and tear on the roads, everything. True, trains would be very crowded for a while, but after that things would level off. Taxes paid by the UK financial services industry contribute over a quarter of the UK's revenue from taxation - no other sector of the economy contributes more. Without that revenue, how are you going to fund your daft ideas? |
