Dover.

Specifically we are thinking about the best place to park your car with
direct access to an underground line that will take us to the main
sightseeing spots in the capital.

From that direction, you won't really be hitting the Underground, but
I take it from the parking question that you'd be driving up?

So why not bail out of the A2 at Blackheath or Lewisham where you've
got frequent train services to central London taking around twenty
minutes. The latter would let you do the day on a zone 1 - 2
travelcard, and there ought to be somewhere to park in reach of the
station (also on DLR). Just have an A - Z.

I would suggest parking at Ebbsfleet International station which is
91km from Dover. Car parking at Ebbsfleet International costs GBP
8.00 per day or GBP 37.00 (Euro 42.00) for up to 7 days.

High speed trains from Ebbsfleet International go to London St Pancras
International station four times per hour. The journey takes between
18 and 21 minutes. The off-peak return train fare including a one-day
Travelcard for all Underground trains and buses is GBP 16.80 for
trains from 09:48 onwards.

Alternatively, you could drive 40km from Dover to Ashford
International station. High speed trains from Ashford International
to London St Pancras International station leave at XX:13 and XX:43
and take 38 minutes. The off-peak fare including a one-day Travelcard
for all Underground trains and buses is GBP 30.20 for trains from
09:43 onwards.

If travelling from Ashford, be sure to ask for the high speed fare.
There are slower trains that serve different London stations. The
journey is much slower (up to 1h 25min) although the fare is cheaper.

Car parking at Ashford International is GBP 11.50 per day or GBP 69.00
for up to a week.

same time. It also depends on how many people in your party.

south east. What's your budget for parking?

There "ought to be", but there isn't. If you come up the A2/M2, then Eltham
or Falconwood would be a better bet. Otherwise, perhaps the M20 to Swanley
for a train to Victoria, then start your tour at Buckingham Palace! Look out
for battered Rolls-Royces!

so far i think i ll take the car to morden train station where we can
continue with the underground (using a travelcard).
We live in belgium and swe r spending xmas around dover.
we fancied a day london but if i look at the prices of a trainticket dover
/london i can take a cheaper flight to spain instead.

There appears to be a cheaper fare at £55.80 (for 2 adults/2 children) to
Victoria rather than Charing Cross, though only one train an hour. East
Coast's journey planner says this is an Off Peak Day Return, while
Southeastern's - same interface - says it's a Super Off Peak Day Return

Southeastern also do GroupSave, from Dover at £13.70 each (so 54.80 for
four). They also claim £1/child, so I don't quite know how this works:

Generally it's cheaper to travel on a weekend, bank holiday, or after 10am
on a weekday. Tickets like Super Off Peak have tighter time restrictions.

For ease of calculation, none of these include the travelcard supplement.

Alternatively, if you drive to somewhere in Zone 6 and buy a paper
travelcard to catch a train (not a tube), it'll be £19 off peak.
