Why couldn't you have gone back to the barrier and got the staff to return the ticket that had been taken in error? I've seen it done before now. I did try this but by the time I realised what had happened I couldn't remember which gate I had gone through and the staff weren't about to open up each gate in turn on a busy morning with a lot of people going through.
