Freedom Pass - any info on it?
Just wondering, as a relatively new user of a Freedom Pass, if it actually
contains any information or if it is just a 'gate-opener'. Ian |

So if necessary your last (I believe) 63 days of travel can be produced as a printed document, called an OCTA printout. |

Yes - the (London) Freedom Pass design now matches the standard ENCTS pass design as used everywhere else in England, and so includes the ITSO logo on the front - example: http://www.londoncouncils.gov.uk/ser...to/anatomy.htm |

Ian Many thanks to all for the info. Ian I, too, am a relatively recent recipient of the Freedom Pass. I have found that in practice it seems to function purely as a gate opener. For example, if I don't touch in at New Barnet (quite easy as it has no gates) it will still let me out at Kings Cross. Similarly, if I don't touch out it doesn't subsequently query my journey. As for buses, on Route 84, which goes a long way out of London to St Albans, the Oyster reader stops working at the travelcard boundary, and for the return journey I have to show the pass to the driver. Further out, on some buses the driver always asks my destination and issues me with a zero charge ticket, while on others it's enough to wave the pass at the driver. Is this because some local authorities pay by journey, while others have a bulk settlement? Peter |

If you don't touch in, an RPI might ask you to prove that you didn't join the train before the start of Zone 6 (i.e. at a station at which your Freedom Pass is not valid). Generally, RPIs just visually inspect Freedom Passes, but I have seen them checked on hand-held readers occasionally. -- Paul Terry |

They all pay by journey but it's a matter for the bus company and the local authority how that's done and this may depend on the type of ticket machine in use. A small number have suitable electronic readers for ITSO cards. Thus a TfL driver will press a appropriate button when a (non-Freedom) bus pass is waved, in the same way as when a paper ODTC is shown. In Surrey I have observed both press buttons (Abellio) and zero charge tickets (Countryliner). I found GUIDELINES FOR OPERATORS pdf on Surrey CC's web site which may be of interest. http://www.surreycc.gov.uk/sccwebsit...f/591f7dda55aa d72a80256c670041a50d/55ade2860da4f0758025783200491a28/$FILE/Ops%20Guidel ines%20-%20%20April%202011-March%202012.pdf -- Mike D |
