Negative balance Oyster on buses

Not having used prepay yet I hadn't realised that it was possible to
run up a negative balance on oyster. This seems like a crazy idea - if
you travel out of zone then why aren't the gates programmed not to let
you through (as at present would happen with an out of zone
travelcard). You'd then go to the assistance window and buy an
extension or be penalty fared (depending on the mood of the staff that
day...)

Anyone know the thinking behind this?

You are supposed to have paid for the whole journey before you travel.
The way the ticket office works (on smaller stations anyway) is that the
Assistance window on the paid side is not constantly manned so it's
better to have people taking their turn in the queues on the unpaid side
by not allowing them to re-enter the system until the debit is cleared
at a window or at a MMF
I don't know if that's the official reasoning but it seems a better way
to handle it to me.
