Operations like Metronom have given us better quality, by quite a margin(!), at a lower cost level. Because they have outsourced much of what other organisations do themselves. Cheers, L.W. |

I just pointed out the fact that Herr Schnell is upset about the Berlin railway workers still enjoying labor standards which they had acquired during GDR times. And there you go, judging what people should or should not be happy with. You are proving again that you are not an honest opponent in any debate. You do not read what I write, or turn it in its opposite. Who, according to the above quoted sentence written by me, is upset? Is my name Schnell? Cheers, L.W. |

I cannot not see any relationship of your libel to the topic. What libel? All I asked was whether you believed that the holocaust (a) occurred and (b) mattered. That after you accused me - without a shred of evidence - of being a Hitler nostalgist, a colonial apologist and many other things. You've made some pretty repulsive accusations, Lüko, and it's not unreasonable to ask where /you/ stand on the issues /you/ raise. Your silence is eloquent. Ian |

Before November 1989? I'm astonished. Definitely. It was about August 1989. No sign of wall coming down at all. They had DDR 40 in lights on a property in Alexanderplatz. Hard to believe now that it never got much further! Went up the funkturm as well- quite a good meal in the telecafe for £5. The Funkturm is in West Berlin. At that time of course the West Berlin S Bahn was being operated by the BVB (BVG) in West Berlin, at least those parts of it which were open. Maybe you are confusing various parts of Berlin? Köpenick is in the East, Funkturm in the West. Cheers, L.W. |

Somebody even claimed that one share changing hands could change the nature of a company. Isn't that really ridiculous? Ownership and financial goals are orthogonal. There are private non-profits, private for-profits, state-owned non-profits, state-owned for-profits and many other variations. Ian |

Lüko wrote I am quite sure that Friedrichstraße was the only East Berlin S-Bahn station where one could buy S-Bahn tickets towards West Berlin in DM. And only in the "non-socialist currency" area, i.e. the area which acted as an exchange station for intra West Berlin traffic. In the "eastern" part of the station there was a ticket counter where you could buy the same tickets at the same price in East German marks. And at least until 1984 those tickets were available all over East Berlin. Maybe after 1984 only at Friedrichstraße, I'm not sure. I can't remember ever having see this. And I have been in Berlin at least once a year since the mid sixties. But not having seen it does not prove that it did not exist. Cheers, L.W. |

Says the man who accuses anyone who disagrees with him of being a Hitler apologist and yet consistently declines to state his own opinion on the murderous proclivities of the Third Reich. You do not read what I write, or turn it in its opposite. It is often very difficult to work out what you are trying to say. Who, according to the above quoted sentence written by me, is upset? Is my name Schnell? You claim that the subway workers ought to be happy with ("enjoying" is the key word) DDR labour standards. I'm still not clear whether you think that should enjoy shooting them if they want to move west. Ian |

On George Orwell's "1984" Sure, one of the best novels of the past century. Strongly based on the coming reality. Of Soviet Russia. No, but he drew lots of his own experience in the Spanish civil war, where the GPU acted as an openly counterrevolutionary force. His "Homage to Catalunya" is the book which earned him the deadly hostility of the stalinists. Orwell knew what he was writing about. Which is more than you do. Well, he made his experience with the BBC by working for it. I am only an observer. But as the title says, it is a book about the future. We are beginning to see it becoming reality. "1984" is more up to date than it ever was. Cheers, L.W. |
