Some ideas should stay in the box because they're just a little bit daft. Agreed -- for a line that's entired in small tunnels, OHLE really would be a waste of space. |

I know it has some technical advantages, like regen brakes and more advanced ATO, but it's less comfortable and less reliable than the stock it replaced, without providing any extra space. If they hadn't used such ridiculously thick walls behind the seats they could have provided quite a bit more standing room. The trains are slightly larger externally but you'd never know it inside. All they've achieved by that is making sure the trains can't run on any other tube line and have to be taken away by road for anything that can't be done at northumberland park. Not the brightest decision LU have ever made. B2003 |

Not the brightest decision LU have ever made. But was it LU's decision, or Metronet's? I don't think LU had very much say in the design of the 2009 and S stock, as long as it met the basic spec. It was also not put out to tender -- Bombardier, as one of the Metronet partners, got the order automatically. |

Not to mention potentially dangerous. There would probably be mere inches from the train roof to the wire so it might not take much for it to touch the train and electrocute everyone. Plus of course they have to retrofit all their engineering trains unless they'd keep the 4th rail for them. Which would render the whole exercise pointless. B2003 |

Don't know, but I'd have thought loading gauge would be a pretty fundamental part of the basic spec. B2003 |

"Mack" wrote in message. Yes, that's certainly true. In fact, from the passenger point of view, I don't think the 2009 stock is any advance on the 1967 stock, or even of the superbly comfortable 1938 stock. I know it has some technical advantages, like regen brakes and more advanced ATO, but it's less comfortable and less reliable than the stock it replaced, without providing any extra space. At least the S stock is air-conditioned and has open gangways, even if it's not really much of a revolution in other ways. Even the top speed is no more than the A stock originally could do. I dislike the 09ts. Victoria line was my local Tube when growing up so I loved the 67ts. 09 just feels like an inflated knock off of a 95. Still not keen on the S stock either. |
