Which Station from Heathrow?

Hello all,
We are taking the underground from Heathrow Airport with the ending
destination of Chester. From looking at a map, we will need to take
the Heathrow Underground (from terminal 3) to Euston station, then
catch a train from Euston to Chester.

My question is: which Euston station is a National Rail station? There
are three on the Tube's website.(Charing Cross, Square, City Branch).

I was hoping there was a direct train but it doesn't look like there
is.... any suggestions?

TIA,
Jen

Correct.

Just plain "Euston" is on the both branches of the Northern line and on
the Victoria line, and will take you directly into the National Rail
station.

Euston Square is less convenient if you have luggage as it is several
minutes' walk away.

I was hoping there was a direct train but it doesn't look like there

The most direct tube route is Piccadilly line from Heathrow and change
to the Victoria line at Green Park. The interchange there is all
underground but it is not ideal if you are carrying a lot of luggage. An
alternative would be to transfer to the Northern line at Leicester
Square - but the Northern can get very crowded at some times of day!

If you have ample transfer time it may be worth considering taking the
airbus which runs directly from all four terminals at Heathrow to
Euston, as this will involve no change. There are two buses an hour and
it would be wise to allow 90 minutes for the journey as London roads are
rather congested!

Another alternative would be to take the Piccadilly to Kings Cross,
and then either the Northern or Victoria line one stop to Euston (from
memory I think the Northern line would be the easier one to change to
at Kings Cross)

A third option would be to change at King's Cross St.Pancras. The
journey will be a bit longer, but the change will be rather simpler - a
short escalator from platform level to platform level.

Good idea. From the Piccadilly Line platforms at King's Cross there's a
short escalator down to the Northern Line. (whereas changing to the Victoria
involves going up some stairs)

I've been to the Piccadilly platforms at King's Cross St. Pancras, and
I think there are a lot of stairs...

You do not have to use *any* stairs to get between the Piccadilly line
platforms and the Northern line platforms at Kings Cross, just a short
decending escalator.

Not down to the Northern Line - there are escalators.

If you don't fancy lugging heavy bags round central London, the other
option would be the Railair coach from Heathrow to Watford, whence
train to Chester by changing at Crewe or somewhere (which you may well
have to do anyway...)

There's another way of looking at this. Take the coach from the central
bus station to Watford Junction (one station out of London for the Chester
trains) then take the train to Chester. How well the journey would wok is
going to depend on the time of the day. For a start, the coach needs to
circumnavigate London on a road which can become very congested during peak
hours and I'm not sure how many direct trains there are or if a change of
train would be required and what the issues with such a change would be.

See http://www.nationalexpress.com/ for the buses and
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/planmyjourney/ for train times.

The Watford route would be good if they are carrying a lot of luggage, it's
a short walk from the bus to the station and whilst there is a flight of
steps up to the main northbound platform there are lifts available...

Or:-

Railair Heathrow - Reading
Train Reading - Birmingham
Train Birmingham - Chester

And a forth would be to use the bus link to Watford Junction and catch
your train to Chester there. No underground involved at all.

Does the Airbus still operate? I looked for details recently via the
Heathrow Airport web site, but all I could seem to find was a reference
to National Express, and on their site, services to Victoria Coach
Station. But I may have missed something, as the web sites didn't
work well with the browser I was using.

It's another site that doesn't want to show you a timetable. As far as I
know, the only services branded as Airbus are the A2 between Heathrow and
King's Cross, and the A6 between Stansted and Victoria.

I think the Airbus branding has gone completely, to be replaced with
"National Express Airport". This is confusing, as the book-in-advance (I
think) NatEx FlightLinks services have also gained this branding.

Euston on the Victoria and Northern lines will take you straight up into
the mainline station. This is the journey you'll probably make from
Heathrow, assuming you're coming in by Underground. You're probably best
changing at Green Park from the Piccadilly line to the Victoria line,
though you ought to know that it's a (short-ish) underground walk between
lines.

Euston Square station is over the road from the mainline station; since
this is served by the Circle and Hammersmith/City lines, you're unlikely
to be using this, unless you're coming in from Heathrow via the Heathrow
Express, which'll cost an arm and a leg (abeit quite a pleasurable one)
and will land you in Paddington.
