I was sent to a Catholic school 5 miles away. There was another one
only four miles away in the other direction.

I don't like posting personal details about my kids but I will say
that in fact our nearest primary is a Catholic school but despite the
fact that my taxes helps pay for it they are not allowed to go there
as non-Catholics. The next nearest school has come in the bottom 10
of schools in the whole of England. Kids were rejected from all our
other choices - about 15 or so - in our own and nearby boroughs.

This post caused the pope to resign.

Is it against your religion to quote anything from the post that
you're commenting on?

I have a threaded newsreader so his meaning was obvious to me. I've added
the message he was commenting to. I think he was joking.

Catholic schools are a special case. Few are any closer than that to the
majority of their pupils.

As it happens, the nearest secondary school to where I was formerly
living in Nottingham was a Catholic one, but the next nearest was
probably some way away.

As a transport issue, the county consulted on (I don't recall the
result) withdrawing school travel subsidy from those children who chose
to travel more than 3 miles to a faith school, when there was a regular
school close by.

I suppose the Catholics complained bitterly?

It seems they did withdraw the dedicated school buses, but gave children
a free bus-pass for the regular [city transport] buses (as long as they
also qualified for free school meals).

"The local diocese reacted angrily to the plans..." although there are
apparently 6 CofE schools as well as seven Catholic ones.

Quotations cause confusion, delay, alarm, despondency and google groups no longer automatically inserts them.

I don't think that's going to happen!

It's only the Catholics who try to insist that their flock only go to
Catholic schools, AIUI.
