Spam and Viruses
Since I have joined this News Group there has been a massive increase of
Spam and viruses sent to my address. Is there anything I can do to prevent this or is it a matter of ignoring and deleting. Does anyone else have this problem? |

Use a fake address or add a bit to be removed like DONTSPAM -- To reply direct, remove NOSPAM and replace with railwaysonline For Train Information, The Latest News & Best photos around check out the Award Winning Railways Online at http://www.railwaysonline.co.uk "Hating Thames Trains since 2003" |

Does anyone else have this problem? I had this problem too until I changed my address and munged it [technical term meaning disguised] so that if it was automatically harvested, the spam mail didn't go anywhere. It's useful for the address you display to be sufficiently close to your real one that you can put simple instructions in your sig to enable legitimate people to e-mail you, but it's best to have a fake domain name (the bit after the @) so that your ISP doesn't suffer from the spam mail. I suggest you avoid well-known additions like NOSPAM or DONTSPAM because some harvesting software can recognise them. See my sig and headers for an example. In OE, do Tools/Accounts, select News and the account you want to use, click Properties/General and set the E-mail address to whatever munged address you want displayed in your posts. -- Richard J. Since a change of ISP was forced on me OE does not remember the address change beyond the current session. Invariably I remember half way through doing a response like this one! -- IanB n.b. as I subscribe to two large newsgroups it may be several days before I see a newsgroup response |
