Which doesn't, in itself, necessarily mean that something is a bad idea...

But, yes, people are already suggesting long distance trains through
the tunnel, but as it's a TfL project, I don't think that demand will
get very far.

That has been suggested for about as long as the idea which became
Crossrail has been around.

I get the impression that there are still normals who think they are
getting Thameslink 2 rather than Central Line 2, or even something like
the line from Brussels Midi to Nord.

Ah, that takes me back! It's amazing how much has changed since then: that
document still talks about Silverlink and of course there's no mention of
the Met going to Watford Junction. Nor, of course, had HS2 been envisaged
back then, and hence not the rebuilding of Ruston, either.

I guess the idea of taking over the Chiltern route didn't last long,
either. The south-eastern branch as actually being built is shorter than
they envisaged back then, too.

I must admit I'm surprised that this long-suggested idea hasn't been
adopted much earlier.

Because it has been timed to coincide with a general election of
course. The Watford MP is of course blowing his trumpet because
Crossrail are "Thinking about it" bot actually "Doing" nothing.
Notice how elections are thinking about doing soemthing then doing
somwthing else.

The main recent trigger, other than the election, seems to be the need to
divert traffic away from Euston during the HS2 rebuild.
