which bit don't you understand?

They are not at locations at which it is possible to walk up to the ticket
office and get cheap return ticket for immediate travel

You either have to plan ahead and buy "advanced" tickets or suffer the
extortionate walk up fare

(or piddle around splitting tickets!)

There are cheaper day-return fares over distances of ~50 miles.

It depends on the route whether there are day-return-only fares (which
is because of regular travellers abusing open returns) or
period-return-only, or sometimes a choice of both.

A Cheap Day Return *is* a walk-up fare. And not hugely cheaper.

Take Whittlesford Parkway, for Duxford Air Museum: £21.10 versus £25.20
for the period return.

There's a cheaper Super-off-peak day return at £16.40, but as you can't
leave Liverpool St before noon it has limited application for the OP's
purposes.

Not really. It is tank related(!).

If you want to see tanks, it is world-class and definitely worth a
visit. Leaving aside any preferences about what exact things they have
in their collections, IMHO it's better as a museum than the French
equivalent in Saumur (between Tours and Angers); I've not done the
German one. There is a Russian one which is meant to have a good
collection but is difficult (impossible?) to visit.

But if you want transport, then Bovington is probably not a priority.

There was a dedicated Museum of Army Transport but a) it was on a branch
line in East Yorkshire, so while technically feasible it was not
sensible as a day trip from London and b) it closed and was demolished
years ago.

Something a little different is the miniature (mainly) steam Romney, Hythe
& Dymchurch Railway:

You can get there fairly easily from Ashford, about 40 mins from St
Pancras.

I wouldn't start from there; stay on the train to Folkestone and get a
bus from there to Hythe. Note that such a trip would require a little
bit of planning; it is not vastly difficult, but it is not the same as
reaching the Bluebell or Spa Valley lines by rail from London.
