Can you recommend any heritage railways within day trip distance from
London? I went to the Bluebell Railway last year, and it was a huge success. I have also been on the Epping Ongar Railway. Or anything else transport related between 8 and 19 June. -- jhk |

If old buses come within scope: Salisbury: 1.5 hours from London: http://www.salisburyreds.co.uk/servi...-celebrations/ DRH |

You could combine several things: Isle of Wight Steam Railway 1938 tube trains operating the 'main line' service (Island Line) Hovercraft from Portsmouth - one of the few left You can combine them on one ticket: http://www.hovertravel.co.uk/attract...lway/index.php There's also the Isle of Wight Bus Museum at Ryde (that I know nothing about) Portsmouth is 1h40 from London, then a bit of time to walk/bus to Southsea for the Hovercraft, or the regular Wightlink ferry connects directly with the train. The latter is a lot more convenient, and gives you the rare opportunity to take a London tube on a seaside pier. Even if you don't travel on the hovercraft, you can at least view them. It depends on the route whether there are day-return-only fares (which is because of regular travellers abusing open returns) or period-return-only, or sometimes a choice of both. -- Roland Perry |

And not hugely cheaper. Take Whittlesford Parkway, for Duxford Air Museum: £21.10 versus £25.20 for the period return. There's a cheaper Super-off-peak day return at £16.40, but as you can't leave Liverpool St before noon it has limited application for the OP's purposes. -- Roland Perry |

Is Bovington Tank Museum "transport related" ? Not really. It is tank related(!). If you want to see tanks, it is world-class and definitely worth a visit. Leaving aside any preferences about what exact things they have in their collections, IMHO it's better as a museum than the French equivalent in Saumur (between Tours and Angers); I've not done the German one. There is a Russian one which is meant to have a good collection but is difficult (impossible?) to visit. But if you want transport, then Bovington is probably not a priority. There was a dedicated Museum of Army Transport but a) it was on a branch line in East Yorkshire, so while technically feasible it was not sensible as a day trip from London and b) it closed and was demolished years ago. -- Arthur Figgis Surrey, UK |

Yes, agreed, it's further and not directly rail-connected. I've always been by car, which is quite easy, with free car parks at Hythe and New Roney. But it is something a bit special, both because of the magnificent miniature 1930s steam locos and the unique scenery at Dungeness. It's particularly good on gala days when they run parallel trains on the double-track section to Hythe, and extra-long trains that appear to go half way round the Dungeness loop. |

Hythe is within Folkestone's PLUSBUS zone (but not the Stagecoach Dayrider). 8 bph from the Bus Station, 2 bph of those pass Folkestone Central first (all these daytimes, Mon-Sat) so not so bad... I wouldn't exactly say it's close to London, but the North Norfolk
Railway in Sheringham is doable in a day. It's about three hours each way from Liverpool St, with a change at Norwich. The current Sheringham platform at the end of the line is across the street from the old station where the preserved railway starts. When I was there a few years ago they were planning to rebuild the level crossing there to reconnect them, but I don't know whether they actually did. |
