Unfortunately Crossrail and the new Moorgate/ Liv St station completely blocks the ability to extend the GN tunnels. "Money no object" is overridden by "physically impossible". The distance is under half a mile. Pedestrian tunnels must be much easier to route than train tunnels are. Extend the Great Northern from Moorgate to Bank as pedestrian tunnel, entered from the platforms, with branches at the south end to deliver to Bank station, other nearby transport nexi, various other places of employment, and the Bank itself. -- (c) John Stockton, Surrey, UK. I believe the plan is that Nortbound trains will be able to run non-stop through Bank as normal during the works, while all Southbound trains will run via Charing Cross. The plan is a 40 day closure Moorgate to Kennington, with trains reversing at the former. This is followed by 77 days where part of the service involves trains running southbound via Charing Cross and northbound via Bank (non-stopping Bank itself) - I don't know if the plan is to use the Kennington siding or run to Morden - and the remainder involves trains reversing south-to-north at Moorgate. -- Clive D.W. Also would probably have potential safety issues in the rush hour. easier to route than train tunnels are. Or , extend the DLR from Bank north. Its pretty deep and the DLR trains don't mind steep gradients so diving under crossrail wouldn't be an issue. It would give people a 2nd option to get the DLR which since the stairs from the northern line down to the DLR are almost impassable in the mornings could only be a good thing. -- Spud |

Really? Yes, I was intrigued by that. I wonder if it's some sort of maintenance or support room, rather than a tracked tunnel? |

Where does the DLR over-run siding at Bank go? Don't know, not far I don't think. But the DLR platforms at Bank are aligned with the northern line so I assume that means they're already aligned north-south. -- Spud |

Makes sense. 700m is a long bit of new tunnel though. On the subject of the DLR I've noticed they never check for people left in the train when it moves out of Bank plus the cleaners tend to ride on it too so it wouldn't be impossible for someone to ride up front to the end of the overrun and take a picture of whats there. And no , I'm not volunteering! -- Spud |
