There are no doubt several hundred thousand of us who interact with the Several hundred thousand? Wow, so many in a city of 8.6 million. Oyster system solely via ticket barriers and the interweb. About the only time I expect to have to go to a TfL ticket office is if my card breaks. So if you don't need to use a facility then no one else does, right? Yes, because the ones out in the station can do more than just sell her a ticket, and she doesn't have to queue to do things like ask them for directions or to help guide her through the station. So you think the people in the ticket office never did anything except sell tickets? And how would you know since you never used them anyway? Also explain how suddenly a queue that would have been for the ticket office suddenly vanishes if the staff member is no longer sitting behind a window. -- Spud |

I would say no , at the moment. But I suspect the long term plan is to not rehire people who leave so reducing staff costs that way. Thank god Boris will soon be out otherwise I suspect LU would have ended up like the DLR or the Newcastle metro with scarcely any staff to be seen anywhere. And yet my experience of a (mostly) staff-free system, posted a few weeks back, is that it works. Of course it works - until one day it doesn't and you need some help. The DLR being a case in point when the jubilee line was out a few months back and Bank was closed at the same time. Tower Gateway station was dangerously overcrowded and there wasn't a single member of staff around to control the crowds or answer any questions. It was only due to luck that someone wasn't seriously injured. -- Spud |

Also why, if I haven't posted for some time, does a message appear, encouraging me to contribute? You need to ask whoever runs "Londonbanter" because all they are doing is mirroring the newsgroup uk.transport.london, which has none of the attributes you mention. -- Roland Perry |

Perhaps he just cancelled / deleted his posts or opted not to post? -- Paul C If this group is not moderated, then why and how do some threads disappear? Also why, if I haven't posted for some time, does a message appear, encouraging me to contribute? Because _you_ post through LondonBanter, which is a gateway and can do what it likes including removing threads and tracking your gaps in contribution, it is not the actual group. Get a real newsreader and those things will not happen. Eric -- ms fnd in a lbry |

Aren't they taking our copyright material and making advertising revenue off it? Or are they based in Nigeria or something? |
