A while ago I got on a bus which went to Mill Hill East. It went up and

But which bus route has the highest vertical climb?

The road from Anerley to Crystal Palace Parade is one of the
steepest.

I used to often take the 249, which includes the steep climb past the
Rookery, between Streatham and Crown Point. Some buses strain a bit
going up that.

Dog Kennel Hill was famous for the special arrangements for the trams to
cope with the steep gradient. But there seem to be no special arrangements
since the trams were replaced by buses.

Rubber tyres - steeper gradients. The fact that most city buses are underpowered
probably doesn't help but unlike trams they won't have any problems with
traction.

The steepest hills I've seen trams operating on are in Lisbon. Some of
them are simply amazing.

There was a tram in Italy - might have been Genoa, too lazy to google - that
I think Portilo went on that required a push up a hill by a cable driven
donkey beause it was so steep.

Turns out its not Genoa but Trieste:

Thats a very long cable pulling a lot of weight up a very steep hill. Not sure
I'd be too happy going on it tbh. Wonder if the wheels have enough grip to
hold everything in place long enough for everyone to get out if the cable fails.

Aha - I was thinking of equus africanus assinus, aka the common donkey,
with some sort of rope and harness arrangement dragging the tram up a
steep hill.

Turns out I've made a bit of an ass of myself...

Wouldn't filming it descending be more interesting?

Looks pretty complex to maintain. Odd place to put a buffer stop in that
picture - on a steep hill.

Go through the buffer stop, tram will end up in the harbour, so not an
odd place at all.
