Trams past my front door again - took me back to trolleybuses past the door in the house I grew up in. However, some of those routes are a trifle optimistic. I don't quite see how you'd make some of the curves on those routes (very short trams needed!) and some roads like Ewell High Street would present a challenge - but you get my vote! Paul |

I guess by optimistic, you're suggesting my American-style Interurban to Leatherhead is a bit much! As far as the route to Epsom goes, the section as far as where the Ewell By-Pass branches off the Kingston Rd isn't a problem - the trams could even have their own lanes down the middle of the A240 dual carriageway (that REALLY would bring a smile to my face in rush hour)! With Ewell High St, the really problematic section would be from the Chessington Rd to the sharp right outside the Star (where that awful mini-roundabout is). Ideally I'd like to make this bit trams and pedestrians only (it would certainly make crossing the road a lot less lethal), maybe with a bit of gauntletted/single track to deal with the curves. |

I'm a bit mystified by all these tram routes in that none of them seem to go to Surbiton Station itself, 5 trains an hour to Waterloo, 15 minutes at the fastest, surely must be the focus of public transport in the Kingston area? The 65 tram (from Ealing) went down Claremont Road, turned right at the station then left up Brighton Road/Hook Road terminating at the North Star. Surely if a Chessington World of Adventure/M25 Park and Ride route is being planned that is the natural route for Kingson/Surbiton/Chessington? Okay the left turn outside the YMCA is a pig but couldn't it wend via St Mary's Road/Cottage Grove or some other detour? Victoria Road would look nice pedestrianised. Actually, yes, that's a good idea (I've just noticed my Epsom route would turn into a total 406 clone). Connections from Surbiton station to London wouldn't be too important - Kingston, Tolworth, Chessington, Ewell, and Epsom all have perfectly good trains to London of their own. However, the fast line platforms there would make it very useful for connections the other way (say to Portsmouth, Southampton etc). |
