In message , at 09:24:19 on Thu, 19 Aug 2004, Boltar remarked: The grant is now £700 and the Prius II drives very, very well. (I'm talking as someone who is thinking of getting one and not someone who's already stuck with it!). Very enviromentally sound In the same sense that a coke-float made with Diet Coke (but normal ice-cream) is dietetically sound? No not really. Theres no wool over the eyes with it as far as I can see. It gets a genuine 50mpg in town traffic. Whats wrong with that? Plus it uses a petrol engine rather than some PM10 belching diesel so it doesn't have to poison the lungs of everyone just to get a low C02 figure either. B2003 |

Robin Wow, I didn't know that. Another good reason to consider one. http://www.westminster.gov.uk/roadsa...icvehicles.cfm ===== The City of Westminster is committed to a cleaner environment and therefore allows electric vehicles to park free of charge during controlled hours on Meter and Pay & Display bays throughout the City. ===== Robin |

I had a look at their web site but didn't see anything straight away. Is a Hybrid car the same as an electric I wonder? TfL doesn't think so (although they discount both). |

No, a Hybrid car is a petrol engined car with electric assistance. You can easily get similar fuel consumption out of a Golf PD Diesel although some would prefer the Prius for it's alleged environmental benefits. |

There are undoubtedly cars that have better CO2 or fuel figures but they are usually a) small cramp cars b) tiny slow engines with terrible performance or more usually c) a+b Besides which I reckon Diesel will be the next big crack down since 4* is gone. |

Even the most efficient diesel does zero mpg while idling in a stationary traffic jam. The prius solves that issue in a nice way. Yes you could keep starting and stopping the engine of a normal car everytime you have to move but it won't be long before you kill the starter motor and the engine gets clogged up with gunk from constantly restarting. With hybrid cars the engine is only run in traffic when the battery is too low to adequately move the car. B2003 |

For comparison, official figures are Prius (all 1.5 models) - 65.7 mpg, 104 CO2, £17495 Polo (1.4 TDI) - 62.8 mpg, 120 CO2, £11035 There's a difference but not THAT great a difference, especially when you factor in the purchase price |

If it were the same size as a polo you'd probably find the prius figures were even better. B2003 |
