The "tube hat" case
I haven't seen it mentioned here but it was on the BBC local news this
afternoon.. ---- A police case against a Tube employee who was accused of trying to sell her official London Underground hat on the internet has been criticised by unions. Alex Wood was arrested then suspended from her job as a station assistant at Waterloo station for eight weeks. A charge of theft was dropped last Friday after four court hearings. The RMT's Bobby Law said: "Finding a London Underground hat in the locker of a London Underground employee at a London Underground station is an astounding piece of police work." The RMT said as of next week wearing a uniform hat will no longer be compulsory. The British Transport Police said: "We take this issue very seriously as items of uniform can be of assistance to terrorists and other criminals. "The member of staff was treated correctly and in line with normal procedures throughout her detention." The court dismissed the charges because there was no confirmation from the website eBay available at that time that the items had been on their website. ---- More at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/3723374.stm Regards Sunil |

The "tube hat" case
As a barrister, I once defended someone for handling stolen goods, to wit, an
empty Royal Mail cash bag! Since, so the Prosecution case went, it would be "impossible" to obtain such a bag except by stealing one, the person (in whose garden shed, under a pile of junk it was found) must have either stolen it or knowingly obtained it from someone who did. I persuaded Prosecution Counsel to drop the charge when I explained that I would return the brief and become a defence witness for my client, to the effect that a few years ago, when buying a large quantity of stamps at a Post Office, they were handed to me in a Royal Mail cash bag since they had run out of envelopes or paper bags! Anyone attending bus or railway rallies or auctions (as I often do) will see a vast array of both current and vintage uniform items for sale. Perhaps the Police ought to visit a few! I would wager it's possible to kit oneself out completely in just about any Underground or other London Transport uniform, including the prized "gold" or "silver" wallet badges which are used to identify revenue protection officials. One of them fetched a 3-figure sum on Ebay a few weeks ago. Marc. |

London Underground station staff are normally very well dressed - and, in their hats as well! Drivers are supposed to wear their hats when outside of the train cabs, but rarely do of course. |

I'm used to 'em however, and yes I'm an old dinorsaur and proud of it, and often they get short shift from me, trouble is these days we have to be nice to 'em and make horrendous announcement all over the shop otherwise we get told off! I wont be around in a few years however 'cos i'll be retired on the nice big fat pension we apparently get. Redtube |

Incidentally, was the cat stolen from Loughton station ever traced? They tend not to stay still long enough to permit it happening. Besides, tracing is really only successful on a reasonably smooth surface. |
