Don't know the area - but it's more likely "copse" which means "wood
of small trees grown for periodical cutting, a thicket".
Alternatively, a "coppice".

I have a scan from a 1948 OS map clearly showing the route taken by the line
in question, I tried to email you but the address bounced.
