Routes 38 and 159
Just to share some news. It has been announced on a Yahoo group today
that Arriva have ordered Mercedes Citaro artics to convert the 38 from October and Volvo / Alexander double deckers (as used on the 68 and 176) to convert the 159 from November of this year. No specific dates as yet. It looks therefore as if the 159 will be the last RM route based on the above but there is a long time between now and then. Get out and about with your cameras as this is your last chance to get a "wintry" scene with a working RM in it. -- Paul C Admits to working for London Underground! |

So saying a MD of one of the London bus companies did state that the 159 would be the last Routemaster route Paul D |

I'm thinking of the 38 in particular. I'm assuming they'll take the opportunity to cut the frequency, as they did with the 73. xx j |

19 goes OPO on the 2nd April so all the last day specials will be on 1 April. Get your pictures and rides in now as it is rumoured the RMs will start to be replaced by new deckers before the formal conversion date. They already have - not entirely, but you get the odd one stabled at Brixton Garage overnight, and I have seen a couple of non-RM-19s running empty to Battersea Bridge from there. -- "Mrs Redboots" http://www.amsmyth.demon.co.uk/ Website updated 4 March 2005 with a new photo |

But Battersea garage is an outstation of Brixton so you will see 19s at Brixton. Also later at night some buses are OPO vehicles as they run onto the N19 night bus service. I've not seen any reports at all of a new OPO bus even delivered for the 19 never mind actually used on one. I would expect things will start to happen within the next week or so if they are going to do so before the conversion. -- Paul C Admits to working for London Underground! |

So which one is likely to be converted last? The 13? Having never taken the opportunity to ride an RM I may need to do so relatively soon. |

The 159 now looks as if it will be the last route to go in November. The 38 will go in October. Having never taken the opportunity to ride an RM I may need to do so relatively soon. Well enjoy the spring or early summer sunshine in a month or so's time and make a day of it. The 14 and 22 out to Putney make a nice run while you'll see lots of life (of varying types) on the 13, 38 and 159. One of my most memorable bus rides last year was from Walthamstow to Kew Gardens using 3 routemaster routes for the main leg - 73 from Tottenham to TCR, then a number 8 across the centre to Green Park and then a 9 to Hammersmith. There were "normal" buses for the other legs but it took about 2 hours and I stepped from one bus to the next with no waiting time. A lovely way to see lots of London but sadly no longer possible by Routemaster. -- Paul C Admits to working for London Underground! |
