Is it just me or does it seem like someone at the top of TfL has it in for
the Borough of Bromley? The Tube stops as New Cross, the Tram stops at Elmers End/Beckenham Junction and the 726 coach is now to finish in Croydon. The Bromley North branch lost its through trains years ago and Thameslink services to Sevenoaks are now a distant memory. I recall that the Fares Fair campaign started in Bromley - is this someone's revenge? Regards, Max Batten Visit me at http://www.thebattens.ndonet.com --- avast! Antivirus: Outbound message clean. "Fares Fair" was Ken Livingstone's attempt to cut Tube prices by 50% during the last years of the GLC, and it was the ratepayers (I think it was in those days) of Bromley, not being on the Tube, who objected to subsidising ratepayers in those boroughs who were. And took the GLC to court and won their case. And now who is mayor of London and heading up TfL???? So you could well be right, but I couldn't possibly comment. -- "Mrs Redboots" http://www.amsmyth.demon.co.uk/ Website updated 3 April 2005 |

Their web site talks about "Excellent rail links to central London with a direct service from Bromley South taking only 16 minutes [which may explain why through trains from Bromley North ceased], and a range of services from the other 26 rail stations in the Borough serving London main line stations." "The Tramlink terminus at Beckenham Junction provides another artery into the Borough, and the New Addington terminus has a direct bus link to Biggin Hill and surrounding areas." The Tramlink terminus at Elmers End is also within the Borough. -- Richard J. (to e-mail me, swap uk and yon in address) |

I think the London Borough of Bromley is rather more keen on car based transport than public transport if the truth be told. The Tube stops as New Cross, the Tram stops at Elmers End/Beckenham Junction and the 726 coach is now to finish in Croydon. The Bromley North branch lost its through trains years ago and Thameslink services to Sevenoaks are now a distant memory. Well TfL and the Mayor have nothing to do with Bromley North trains or Sevenoaks being served by Thameslink. I agree the 726 decision is silly but TfL seem to be on a mission to kill the route completely. As for Tramlink I can't see Bromley ever supporting a campaign that might damage main line commuter services, might demolish properties or shock, horror put trams down roads to the detriment of cars. If a council is not fighting its corner then it will lose out in the wider scheme of things given scarce resources. I recall that the Fares Fair campaign started in Bromley - is this someone's revenge? Bromley is a pretty well off sort of place and parts of the Borough are fairly rural / lightly populated so it's perhaps understandable that you don't have buses running at 5 minute headways. If you think you are badly off in terms of public transport - especially buses then simply compare and contrast the service levels and fares and network coverage with those "over the border" in Kent. I think you might then realise you are not so badly off after all. I somehow imagine the Mayor has more important things to do politically than trying to snub for the London Borough of Bromley for past court cases. -- Paul C Admits to working for London Underground! |

People like that don't seem to quite get the idea of living in a society. B2003 |

... Is it just me or does it seem like someone at the top of TfL has it in for the Borough of Bromley? With the excellent rail service to London (fast services from from Bromley South and Orpington), it is surely your northern neighbours in Bexley who should be moaning... But then again, I don't necessarily want to see *more* public transport here, just better *quality* public transport. I am fed up with noisey, empty buses thundering all over the borough at night just polluting the place because TfL have an obsession with frequency and zero regard for the state of the infrastructure. I would love TfL to halve evening bus frequency and provide two staff per bus - and that would be a clean bus with no old food and drink containers strewn across it and without groups of mindless vandals scratching the windows on the top deck. I look at this way - if you want "city centre" levels of public transport, then move to "proper" London, not the fringe boroughs where most people see themselves as living outside London anyway.
