More Tube lines now have live ETA boards
The Bakerloo line is now joined by the Jubilee, Metropolitan, Northern
and Victoria lines in having 'live' ETA Boards (the Tube equivalent of National Rail's Live Departure Boards). There's web, WAP and PDA versions available. web - http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tube/travelinfo/eta/ WAP - http://www.tfl.gov.uk/wap/eta/ PDA - http://www.tfl.gov.uk/pda/ And "more lines [are] to follow in the next few months". |

It's good that they've added the Met and Northern, which have low frequencies on some of the outer branches. This will make the service much more useful. (Having said that, only the more central Met stations are available, and in any case when you choose one it says "Information for the Metropolitan line is currently unavailable", but hopefully this will be fixed soon.) |

Still nothing for the District Line, which hasn't even got the standard
dot matrix system in use on the Northern for perhaps 20 years. Bow Road's new WB platform indicator board use smaller lettering, are less centrally located on the platforms, illuminate the 'next train' message later than its predecessor, and still doesn't give more than 2 minutes' advance warning!!!! Useless!!! |

Of course I mean still not got on many of the branches - if Bow Road -
Upminster can be considered a 'branch'. |

Something seriously wrong with the southbound Jubilee indications at
Finchley Road: it displays northbound destinations! "Mizter T" wrote in message ups.com... And unless I'm misreading something on the WAP version (I don't have much previous experience with these boards) it's advertising Northbound departures from Stanmore! -- Ian Jelf, MITG Birmingham, UK Registered Blue Badge Tourist Guide for London and the Heart of England http://www.bluebadge.demon.co.uk |

But very useful if you're out and about to go Underground, and arguably more useful than checking said information on the screen of an immovable computer via the web. |

True, although it might be possible in the future to install screens around the stations/platforms that will show other lines, either at the same station, or perhaps even on the next stations with interchanges. Perhaps touchscreen panels on the platform (like near the information point) that let you select a station and view realtime train info and service information/updates. This could be great for finding out if you'll make the next change, and at night when the trains aren't as frequent, you can instantly tell if you're going to need to run or not! In fact, the whole journey planner could be offered on and around stations for tourists too - in multiple languages. Not as a replacement to staff (I suspect this would potentially happen, sadly) but as a valuable alternative of real benefit to all. Jonathan |

snip A WAP and/or SMS version of the planner would also be nice, if one doesn't already exist - though admittedly this would be useless on tunnel sections. Both TfL and National Rail have had WAP sites for some time, and both offer a WAP version of their journey planner whilst you can also get access to National Rail's Live Departure Boards (LDB) on their WAP site. The Tube's ETA Boards are also available as WAP pages (see the original post in this thread). I've particularly found the National Rail LDBs and very useful whilst out and about, and the TfL Journey Planner has come in handy too. Full URL's are below. However some users may find it easier to get to these services through their networks WAP portal (e.g. through Orange World, 02 Active, t-zones or Vodafone Live). Depending on how you're charged for accessing WAP sites, it may be cheaper to do it this way as well (as I think some networks won't charge you for accessing pages through their portal). ----- TfL WAP site http://wap.tfl.gov.uk/ TfL Tube ETA Boards WAP version http://www.tfl.gov.uk/wap/eta/ National Rail WAP site http://wap.nationalrail.co.uk/ There's also an URL for a PDA version of the TfL site, though as I don't have a PDA I've never used it. http://www.tfl.gov.uk/pda/ ----- This webpage will give you an overview of TfL's services for mobile users: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/mobile/ ....and this page gives examples of the services offered (including an SMS journey planner service): http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/mobile/mob...p?cnt=examples This National Rail webpage gives an overview of their mobile services: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/passen...o_on_the_move/ |
