Alcoholic Drinks Served at Underground Stations
 

On a training session yesterday I was told that Sloane Square was once
one of only two stations on the London Underground licensed to serve
alcoholic drinks.

The guide couldn't tell me what the other one was, though. Does anyone
here know?

I'm sure there was more than one.

Liverpool Street had a bar counter on the Eastbound Circle/Met/H&C
platform until not too long ago.

Baker Street had a bar inside the barriers, and I think that Kings
Cross had a bar between the Eastbound circle and concourse that once
carried the running lines (or was that just an unlicensed buffet?)

Sloane Square was famous for having a bar (often described as a pub) on the
platform that was apparently used as a meeting place by several leading
literary figures.

Apparently Liverpool Street also had a bar on the eastbound Met/H&C/Circle
though whether it was a walk in and sit down job I'm not sure.

Baker Street and Victoria also seem to have had bars within the station but
not on the platforms so the information you were given may be slightly
incorrect.

There are counters selling food on quite a few platforms, not sure which
is the other licenced one. Baker Street on the northbound Metropolitan,
on the westbound circle at Monument (or somewhere along that stretch
anyway) and between the platforms at W&C Bank.

There are several shops and coffee/snack bars within St James's Pk
station, but they aren't on the platform side of the barriers. Not sure
if any are licenced. Perhaps there's one within the Bond St complex (not
sure how you define what part of that is the "station").

The two examples I know of are Sloane Square and Baker Street. As others
have said Sloane Square had the bar on the w/b platform while Baker
Street was at ticket hall between the Circle / H&C overbridge / stairs
and where you go down to platforms 3 and 4 for the Met Main. I think it
is a Treats Snack Shop now.

The one a Victoria was on the site of the current District line ticket
office (the office not the public area)

AFAIK Sloane Square and Liverpool Street were the only ones actually on
platforms.

There certainly was a licensed refreshment room at Bayswater between the
ticket hall and the stairs to the southbound platform in the early 60's
as it was the place I learnt to drink Worthington White Shield rather
than Watneys Red Barrel!

I also recall there was a bar at King's Cross just before you got to the
Met ticket offices.

Thanks to everyone for all the replies.

While I understand that giving absolutes like "one of only two for x
ever built" is always fraught with dangers, I think that the nugget of
information on which the comment was based probably had the Baker Street
example outlined by Paul and others in mind.

The (excellent) guide concerned also kept referring to Sloane Square as
a Tube station, so I thought I'd better not get into *that* one.....

As I only got to London in the 1980s I can only comment on what I saw
with my own eyes. I can see how Liverpool St could have a bar at
platform level but Bayswater is an interesting twist given that it's not
exactly the most spacious of stations.
