Waterloo This Afternoon
There are absolutely no trains going either way through Vauxhall at the
moment, 15.55. There is one outbound Eurostar which has stook at signals for about 10 minutes now. kevin |

It's unheard-of to get on a plane and then be stuck on the tarmac at Heathrow for 45 minutes. Imagine the furore if that were to happen! What's that, Skippy? "Loads of flights get stuck on the tarmac awaiting take-off, and the average delay on short-haul flights is far greater than the average delay on intercity trains"? Wash your mouth out with soap, Skippy: we'll have none of that Commie train-loving talk round here... -- John Band |

According to SWT website its due a lightening strike on signal cabling so your guess is probably as good as anyone's! |

TfL at 17:37 are advising passengers to travel to Clapham Junction, presumably from Victoria. No trains Waterloo-Clapham Junction. Waterloo & City Line also suspended due to power failure after lightning strike. Met & Jubilee suffering minor delays due to lightning strike at Finchley Road. It was starting to be cleared by then but it was obvious from the Southern side something was screwed as the CIS displays at Clapham were kaputt and there were crowds lining the SWT platforms ten deep. Mind you Victoria had its own problems, after standing for fifteen minutes past departure time waiting for someone to come and unlock the doors on the East Grinstead service, the driver failed to show and a couple of thousand very cheesed off looking passengers were forced to cram onto anything heading to East Croydon. The Eastbourne and Horsham services got suddenly very cosy! TfL at 17:37 are advising passengers to travel to Clapham Junction,
presumably from Victoria. No trains Waterloo-Clapham Junction. Waterloo & City Line also suspended due to power failure after lightning strike. Met & Jubilee suffering minor delays due to lightning strike at Finchley Road. I arrived at Waterloo today at about 1840. Trains about ten minutes late, but no spectacular problems. I arrived at Bank at around 18:30, and the whiteboard advised SWT passengers to travel via tube to Wimbledon or Richmond. Apparently things had started moving again at 18:07 though, and I got to stand on the platform at Wimbledon an hour later watching trains that I could have caught had the information been up to date, or even accurately mentioning that Clapham Junction was still open, running straight through. It got me thinking, wouldn't it be a good investment by TFL to replace all those whiteboards with centrally controlled electronic signboards that do not rely on chinese whispers for the information to get to the station staff, and do not rely on staff, who are probably overworked by this stage answering questions from desparate commuters, having the time to keep them up to date? I have seen some electronic versions so maybe this is already happening, but I'm not sure if they're centrally controlled. |

If information is provided by a person, with a whiteboard marker or whatever, at least it's information. The garbage spewed out by bug-ridden computer systems is not information. It's just mindless response to various inputs whose complexities and implications are not adequately predicted in the programs. "Centrally controlled" doesn't have to mean that the information is computer-generated. The current system relies on someone centrally generating information (e.g. that SWT trains had started running again from Waterloo, in this example) and passing it out by whatever means to stations, whose staff then update whiteboards etc. If the transmission could be direct to electronic displays in the stations, it would be more up-to-date. -- Richard J.
