Titfield Thunderbolt
 

On Classic FM (during a film music programme) the presenter alleged this
film was made on the Tallyllyn Railway. Clearly that is wrong as it was
standard gauge, but where was it filmed? Anyone know?

The truth is that the author was *inspired to write* the movie
after visiting the Talyllyn Railway and seeing the enthusiasm of
the railfans running it.

On the then recently closed ex-GWR branch from Limpley Stoke to
Camerton, in Somerset. The main-line scene is at Bristol.

Yes: the opening scene shows a main-line train on the Bath-Evercreech S&D
line crossing Midford Viaduct while a train on the Cam Valley branch crosses
underneath. It's jusst about possible to visualise this nowadays, standing
on the disused viaduct (now a cycle track) looking down on the remains of
the Cam Valley line - the earthworks are still there but a lot of the
bridges have been demolished.

Titfield station was Monkton Coombe station which, as far as I can tell,
is/was at the junction of Mill Lane in Monkton Coombe (alongside the private
school) and the road from Limpley Stoke that goes along the old trackbed.

The cricket scene (including the infamous ball that knocked the bails off
but then passed over the batsman's head!) is at Limpley Stoke very close to
the junction with the Bath-Bradford line, with the road viaduct in the
background.

I was there a few weeks ago and I tried to find all the places. The one
place I didn't find was the place where the bus crossed over the railway
during the bus-train race: I couldn't see any sign of the railway at the
point where it was shown on my OS map.

Some scenes were shot elsewhe

- the loco was stolen from Oxford (maybe from just north of the station)
- it was driven through the high street of Woodstock, near Oxford
- it was then driven through Richmond Park before colliding with the tree
- the replacement loco (the Titfield Thunderbolt) was stolen from the
Science Museum in Kensington

That is, the scene of it being removed from the museum was filmed
there. The locomotive itself was "Lion", built in 1838, and was
borrowed from the Liverpool Engineering Society museum. It was
taken by road to Westbury for overhaul, and continued to the filming
locations under its own power.
