This is only true for the first time, to activate auto-top-up.
After that the card will top up at any gate you enter through.

Indeed - and it will also now automatically get topped-up on buses
and trams too.

Arguably getting auto-topup activated on an Oyster card is worth an
unneccesary Tube journey at £1 or £1.50. You could incorporate it
into a weekend stroll!

Not for those of us that have to use Oyster but don't use £20 worth in a
year.

I know - but I can rarely predict in advance (i.e. more than a couple
of minutes in advance) what my next Tube journey will be. I mostly end
up pre-paying on buses.

Why can't you get the setup "signal" from one of the ticket machines, I
wonder, or at a ticket office?

As always when this subject comes up, we should stress that it is possible
to purchase an Oyster card online that comes with auto top-up already
enabled so it is less of an issue than it was, and it is also possible to
pick up the auto top-up from tram stops now for those who live in that part
of town.

Didn't know that. Do they post it out to you? (I don't like in
London). If so I might well do that and get the deposit back on my
existing one, which is getting a bit scruffy now anyway.

Does this mean that after you have applied for auto-top-up, your
nominated station has to be the _first_ one you then touch in at?
(or could you use your existing PAYG balance elsewhere first?)

Thanks

Henry

You can use it anywhere, but the auto top up function won't be
activated until you go through the nominated station. I'm not sure if
you can set it to activate a bus or tram as well.

Not as I understand it.

I believe so.

Yes, just go to http://sales.oystercard.com/ and you'll see you now get a
choice of ordering an Oyster with or without auto top-up and it gets
delivered to you ready to go. To my mind it is something they should be
promoting a lot more.
