That would have been done long before, when the lines were shut to the public. How? You close the station gates at street level, then run all the trains to the depot. -- Roland Perry And what would you do if the train operators had abandoned the trains and taken the keys with them? |

But do you seriously believe that the entire population of the UK would continue to behave as normal, civilised people after all the infrastructure has been destroyed beyond recognition. There's no particular reason why they would be left pointing into a siding, but even if they were I'm sure the train crew would have a way to shift them back to the through line. True, but in the case we're talking about, they might well be left pointing at Uxbridge! tom -- a blood-spattered Canadarm flinging goat carcasses into the void |

People keep trying to deflect the scenario to one of total destruction. That's not the situation I had in mind. Nor did I expect a transition from normal to chaos in half an hour. -- Roland Perry |

Yes, believe it or not underground trains need a key or keys to get them moving, in fact so do most of the mainline trains as well. Up until the Central Line stock two keys are needed, a control key to turn the train on, so to speak, and a selector key which allows the train operator to select which way the train will go. -- Roland Perry |

And these keys are different for each train? Maybe so, but I'd always thought they were one key that fitted all of them. Isn't it a bit inconvenient to have a different key for each train if you are reversing tube trains using the "stepping back" principle (that's where one driver gets in the far cab and drives the train straight off, while the original driver walks down the platform to be ready for the next one). -- Roland Perry |
